Not about gender/very short/potentially racist image
First, if you're buying this book to teach your child about gender diversity, be forewarned that the book's approach to gender is so subtle as to be indiscernible. Second, the book is very, very short--about half the length of other books we've read to our little goddaughter, for whom it was purchased. Third, and this is why we returned the book, there is an image and rhyme combination that we felt was racist: a kid who could be perceived as African American is paired with a rhyme about a monkey, which calls up a long and painful history of racist caricature. Arguably or generously, I suppose it could be seen as an accident or a coincidence, but I feel these writers had a responsibility to pay attention, do their research, and perhaps then they would not have called up unfortunate racial stereotypes in a book meant to be affirming.
