★★☆☆☆
In dire need of an update. Unbalanced and awful photographs---vintage 1979!
First published in 1979, and in its 32nd printing, but apparently without notable updates. Although comprehensive in its way, it is first of all biased towards minerals by a 5 to 1 margin! And most of those minerals the average person is unlikely to ever see except in a minerals collection----only dedicated mineral hunters will ever encounter them otherwise. Furthermore, many if not most of the images of minerals are of sections or polished/cleaned specimens---so, not what you will see in the field! The author died in 1991at age 78. There are only 40 images of rocks, what most people will encounter on hikes or road cuts. And the photos are all from 1979 apparently, and quite a few are just awful even by 1979 standards. Part of my job is photography in a museum and museum settings, so I know whereof I speak. Extremely disappointing, not up to the standards of the other current Audubon guides at all (excepting the text, perhaps).
