My Honest Review
This is my honest review. Just to prove that, I haven't written a "so go and buy this other juicer instead" statement at the end.
So I've been looking for the perfect counter top Juicer ($250-$350 price range), and after going to [...], and watching their excellent demo/marketing videos, I was sold. I bought the Juicer for close to $300, brand new from Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and for $300, I'm expecting perfection (the casual countertop kind).
Before using this appliance, I wanted to love it. The box, the visual design, the brand... it was all great! But when it came to juicing, what I would find was far from that...
PROBLEM #1 - This is the loudest kitchen appliance you will own. Juicer VS Blender articles would often talk about how "loudness" is a "con" of blenders, and quiet operation the "pro" of juicers... not with this one. If you've put ice in a blender before, expect the same amount of noise from the high preset on this juicer. The motor is beautifully strong, which is great, but it makes the machine sound like it's about to take off into outer space. Even on low, it makes quite a grumble. If you're the kind that has no problems with vacuum cleaning at 2am, this shouldn't bother you much. But for the rest of us who don't live in sound booths, expect to be getting a few knocks on the door from your neighbors.
PROBLEM #2 - Not efficient at all. Although the motor is extremely strong, what good is all the strength in the world if it can't actually extract the juices efficiently? The first night I got this juicer, I went and bought $40 worth of fruit. Yes, I was super excited. Strawberries, raspberries, tons of grapes, ginger (YES!), tons of apples, oranges, and a bunch of carrots. I juiced about 60%-75% of what I bought that night, and I kid you not... I extracted two pitchers out of all that fruit. That's about 6 glasses of fruit, max. That might sound like a lot, but do the math, and we're talking $5 a glass... that's just as much, if not more, than what you would pay at a juice bar. Plus, YOU'RE the one juicing, and guess who cleans up afterwards?!? Yes... you!
PROBLEM #3 - Very messy. When you look at the container for the pulp, you can see where it is connected to the cover - the cover of the pulp container... well, the problem is that the cover doesn't function as a cover all too well, so the pulp that gets extracted from the juicing process actually flies out from the crack between the pulp container and it's cover. And please don't tell me I'm probably assembling the Breville all wrong. I've handcrafted walnut and maple chests, as well as furnished most of the apartments I lived in as a college student with IKEA furniture. The assembly on this thing is really a no brainier. You're gonna be looking at carrot, strawberry, and apple splattered walls (if your kitchen walls are white) and a very sweet and sticky floor. Simply put, it leaks like a tumbler that isn't closed quite tightly enough.
PROBLEM #4 - It spits. Not only does it spit from the cracks in between the bad engineering, but the actual feed chute (the tunnel you throw your fruit into) is a Pandora's box to exploding fruit juice. Part of the reason why this machine spits juice out like crazy (unless the feed chute is covered by the food pusher at all times... meaning everytime you open it to put fruit inside, it spits ferociously) is that the feed chute is located right above the actual juicing mechanism, as opposed to a little to the side. So it's as if you were to take the cap off of a blender... while it's blending. Fun huh? Not so much.
So again... after buying this product with high hopes, I was pretty let down and decided to return it (trying desperately to convince myself not to while on the way back to the store lol).
I haven't found my perfect juicer yet (again, I'm not talking about $4000 industrial ones), but I'll repost when I do.
I hope this review helped you, and I hope we both find the perfect (and affordable) juicer! Let me know if you find yours first :)).
