No Easy Day = Broken Trust
I read this book because I was interested, but it really left a bad taste in my mouth.
Matt Bissonnette, aka Mark Owen, makes many claims that he's 'setting the record straight' and that others have taken too much credit for this mission, but his point narrow and naive, consisting of second-guessing the entire chain of command as though he has a better grasp on the geo-political ramifications of invading a sovereign country and essentially assassinating terrorists than policy makers do. (I'm all for this by the way but it is hubris to think that you know enough to make these decisions from street-level.) The feeling that this gave me is the same that you get when a child is telling you that 'they know' already.
The book itself is pretty straight-forward and a very simple read, brushing through a number of deployments but without any real detail. The best description of the writing would probably be 'mediocre', reading something like a big-print novel with descriptions of 'what' happened but without any depth or descriptive detail. It reminded me quite a bit of a 'Lassie' novel with that same kind of generalization and descriptiveness.
I think that the challenges that others have with the author are right on the mark. The author, who I greatly admire for his service as a SEAL, has broken trust with everything that he fought for. His team and commanders should have received more respect.
