Their failure, my dime?
Well I thought I'd give these a try, and I did. Also have a set of Grizzlys and some Freuds, but I had the idea that here was a decent little set to haul around my little house construction project for 'non-finish' quality intermediate tasks.
Now for a budget set maybe they're not all bad, but... as previous reviewers have reported, the 1/4" is all bad. Snapped as previously pictured, first time out of the box, going real easy on the third hole 1/8" deep into white pine.
O.K... these things happen... except they don't, at least not to me. 30+ years woodworking and this is the first time I've had a router bit fail catastrophically.
So.
Sure I could return the whole thing to Amazon and let MLCS and the Zon eat it. But hey... why play the role of Richard first without exploring alternate possibilities.
I decided to call MLCS directly (all the way from Japan, on my dime) and see what they'd say. Stayed up 'till 02:00 (that's AM yo) because time difference, no problemo... full moon anyhow. Denise answered the phone, a brief sitrep had her saying I needed to talk to someone in 'woodworking', said she'd transfer. Hold music for a minute or so, then a 'click' and call fail. So I called back again.
Success on this attempt, although 'woodworking' answered as though they were taking a personal call... waited for a name but it never came. Could have asked but sometimes you just gotta wait and see how an outfit works. So I did that, while telling the guy what happened.
Now... if I make something, or repair something, or generally have my name attached to it, and somebody has a problem... well then I consider it my duty to make things right, the best I can. Used to work that way, all over... times have changed, I guess. MLCS puts that responsibility on the buyer of their goods it seems... what I was told, after being placed on hold again while a consultation was made with the 'sales' department, is that I needed to photograph the wreckage, e-mail it in, and pay for shipping for a 'courtesy' replacement.
Insert sound of needle being dragged across record here.
Like I'm trying to scam the company for a lousy router bit from halfway across the planet. Picture... fine. Making me eat the delivery on your failure to deliver quality goods in the first place, lol.
I bought these on October 28, 2015... it is now March 22 2016. So these are supposed to be still under warranty. 'Courtesy'... no. Not even close. Their cost on that bit has to be in the neighborhood of a couple of bucks, and shoving one into an envelope would only be another couple delivered to what would have been a satisfied, if not completely thrilled woodworker who is constantly looking for good places to score quality gear, both in terms of product and service.
As it stands, I spent more on the phonecall(s) than it would have cost them to keep a customer.
You see where this is going...
The bits: straight to the bottom shelf. Could have screwed up the piece I was working on, or me, or my tools; not taking any more chances with 'em. Amazon has been good to me, and I'm not going to bother them about it. Not their fault.
My experience with MLCS: straight to this review, for a heads up to any and all potential router bit purchasers out there.
You work hard for your money, spend it where they work hard for it too.
MLCS is, in my humble opinion, not one of those.
Do better.
