What the hell?
CTA is the best Chicago album of all time. Period. I bought it in 1970, when I was 12 yrs old and it changed my life. The original CD release was muffled and muddy. Then in 2002 Rhino remastered it, and the results were excellent. THIS has to be what the band heard in the studio. Then, the fancy new "50th Anniversary Remix" was announced. After hearing many recent "50th Anniversary" remixes that were really improved sonically (White Album, Sgt. Pepper, etc.), I was salivating over this one. Then I listened to it. The hype sticker on the shrinkwrap touted that it was remixed by Tim Jessup. I have no idea who that is, but he should never ever remix anything ever again. This release sounds like crap. In fact, it sounds like it's coming out of an AM radio dashboard speaker in a 1973 Chevy Nova. Is that the sound they were going for? I could swear that "Introduction" was folded over into mono. Seriously. I couldn't even recognize Does Anybody Know..." because it was so tinny and shrill. My 2 star rating is an average of 5 stars for the music, 0 stars for the remix. So very, very disappointed. Didn't ANYONE at Rhino listen to this garbage before releasing it?
Stick with the 2002 Rhino remaster. THAT one sounds fantastic.
p.s. The original word I wanted to use in the review title was not hell, but has the same number of letters.
