Frustrating! Unreliable!
Lots of problems with this over-priced all-in-one unit. 1. Fragile bracket can't hold the weight of the tablet. My second bracket broke on the second day. Have to call for a third one, but it'll break too. Will probably be going back to using 3M heavy duty mounting tape, which works better than the weak mounting tabs on the factory mount, but having to use tape is rediculous considering the purchase price 2. Runs hot! And the GPS will lock up if it gets too hot. I've been trying to shield the unit from the sun using a white hanker chief, which helps, but is again rediculous considering the purchase price. Besides, it's not easy to keep a hanker chief in place. 3. Satellite radio app freezes up constantly. Stopped at least a dozen times today. Didn't appear heat related because the GPS wasn't also freezing up. 4. GPS address search is very particular with respect to spelling. For example, sometimes US10 works, but sometimes it wants US-10, and sometimes US HWY 10. Also, it can't always find addresses that are easily found using Google Map. If you don't notice a spelling mistake while typing, you have to start over because you can't place the cursor anywhere except the end of what you are typing, which is unforgivable considering this is a touch screen device. 5. Constantly having to fiddle with the damned thing is unsafe. I actually blew through a weigh station today because I was trying to reboot for the umpteenth time. 6. Eats the battery at a prodigious rate because so much software is running in the background. Although it automatically charges on the mount, you'll have to also plug a 12v cord directly into the tablet or it'll be dead six hours into your day. 7. Although the dash cam feature is cool, recording hogs up a lot of memory, forcing me to not use it. Pros: Great to have an all-in-one unit ...at least on paper. GPS is accurate. Satellite radio display is great. Love the large screen! Built-in atlas replicates Rand's paper atlas. On-screen ability to notify technical support team of speed limit corrections. Cons: Constant stability problems, caused either by the software, or the very high temps this unit generates. Wholly inadequate mounting bracket is utterly laughable, and not able to hold the tablet's weight over rough Midwestern roads. Battery goes dead half way through your trip. No replacement screen protector available from manufacturer. In summary, I think the designers crammed too much into this product, which resulted in a device that can't do anything very well. UPDATE: 1. Manufacturer introduced an improved mounting bracket. Customer service told me I was on a list to receive the new bracket as soon as they were introduced, but that never happened. I had to call back months later to find out the new edition had been available several weeks prior. That new replacement bracket lasted about a year before breaking in the same place as the previous edition. 2. I also discovered Rand MacNally, the world's preeminent cartography experts, rely exclusively on third party sources for their GPS mapping (WTH!!!?). All speed limit, road weight limit, and mapping edit suggestions get passed along to these third party sources who never seem to update with the suggested corrections. 3. Old style mini USB port no longer holds the weight of any charging cord. 4. A direct replacement screen protector is not available ...had to go generic and cut it to fit. I finally just gave up and removed this clunky unit from service.
