★☆☆☆☆
Miserably written and Irresponsible (CONTAINS SPOILERS)
SPOILER ALERT I am shocked, as many are, that this book would receive a 5 star rating from anybody. I am editing my review, because I finished the book, and I am disgusted with the authorʻs irresponsible handling of the sexual abuse theme. The 17 year old main character finally remembers that her father repeatedly raped her when she was a small child, and then begins her healing by- wait for it- losing her virginity to her boyfriend THAT SAME DAY! Really?? I really hope that the young readers of this book donʻt think thatʻs a good way to handle memories of childhood sexual abuse. Also, the Holder character seems smothering and borderline unstable/abusive himself. Punching lockers? Climbing through her window with no warning? Repeatedly grabbing her wrists? Clamping his hand over her mouth? And heʻs touching her and kissing her shoulder as she confronts her father? I found him disturbing and nearly as creepy as Skyʻs father. The only thing that rings true here is that some abuse survivors repeat the pattern of abuse by becoming involved with other abusive partners. Otherwise, his behavior seems like nothing more than a big collection of red flags to me. My horror at the story line aside, this is also the most poorly written book I have ever read. Bad grammar and vocabulary misuse on almost every page- too many to count. I will say that one of my "favorites" is Sky being "deduced to tears". It would be funny if it wasnʻt so sad.
