Grinding Out The Problem
Reading previous reviews, it appears several others are having the same problem as my wife. She is quilter and loves the iron's steam features and the auto lift. The problem is the Oliso TG100 - 1800 Watt Smart Iron lasted less than 10 months of use and the auto lift quit working. It will work at times for a few lifts, but then the gears in the motor make a loud grinding noise and locks up. I took the iron apart to identify the problem. The small sealed gear box is attached to a rotating shaft which raises and lowers the feet. I suspect they use nylon or plastic gears to drive the shaft which operates the feet. If excess pressure is applied to the feet to start the retraction or possibly dropping the iron a little too hard will round off the gears until they start skipping and making the grinding sound.
COMMENT UPDATE: As stated previously, my wife liked the iron and felt the excellent features were worth another chance. A new iron was ordered, but the automatic feet did not work properly right out of the box. The first time it was powered up, the auto lift was making an excessive noise. After a week of use, the noise became a grinding vibration and the auto lift did not always works when touched. The iron had to be jiggled to get it to activate. Sending it back for refund today.
