Excuse me for the long and probably none native written review: My theme is why truth matters and why it matters to the people outside of US of A... It is hard for me to gather enough attention span to write a review or comment on anything, especially for a success story of a China Born Entrepreneur. But this book and many reviews (as well as "clarification" from Ms Fu) made it compulsory for me to add my 2 cents, regardless my intention to be "above all the silliness" or "remain silent". So bear with me, and read the entirety, it is not that long:). My background: You might say, I am in the same boat as Ms Fu: I came to US in the mid 80s (in 20th century), we all had the scares of the CR (Cultural revolution) -- no-one in China can escape that in that age; no one will defend that, the people, the government, or anyone else; we all managed to stay in US, making our own ways of living, some grand, some quiet, all of us quietly blessing our luck that we made it to this side of the pond. Our commonality ends there, unfortunately. In a way, I generally support a Chinese success story, regardless if it is overly exaggerated, as we are all from the same "old country". One success is good (and encourage for other successes). But, do know exaggeration, not fabrication -- you may ask, where is my line: here is the simple one: I dreamed that I have landed on the moon with all the glory and honor; I will be a fraud if I claimed I did land on the moon (on 1971...). Now back to the book and why my giving it a 1 start (if I could, it will be a -5 start) for a memories: 1. for Memories - i expect fact and truth, not "imagination" 2. for Memories - I expect honesty, not "me the hero" Let me address the book and many of the comments, so bear with me: For many of the 5-start comments, we can categorize as the following: 1. Those who promoted the book based on personal benefit (or relationship) This includes the family and friend of the writer and publisher. I can understand the family loyalty, i will not fault your desire to help, for the general public reader: The simple message should read: My "xxx" wrote this, I suggest you buy one" (so we all make a penny of you; we can be proud of xxx)-- I cannot fault the effort, family is everything, but at least we should be up front, instead of quoting from the "talking points" Many of you are decent professionals, I would hope you would at least to clarify once you have learned that your endorsement might have been unduly published. 2. Those who tried to defend using their credential (but, secretly, they are personally related): This includes people who had the public acknowledgement of their position and accomplishment, but has really no bearing on any facts of the stories Ms Fu has propagated. Many of us are in the computer science fiends, we are all impressed by Herbert and his accomplishment (which extend to Ms Fu for all fairness). But we know full-well that Ms. Fu's stories are a little far-latched (and even a little delusional), we are all friends so we are obliges to "go to bat". My problem: Professor Erica: how can you say "I vouch..." when Ms Fu clarifies that some facts are "imaginary"... 3. Those who knows and like Ms Fu.: I can sympathize, from the call by MartynDay, we need your help, just write something positive -- whatever it is. I respect the commitment to friends (personal or professional), it is honorable, regardless blindness or not. Friends will support friends -- that is what friends for. In a way, Marty, John (and many others did). I appreciate your loyalty for Ms Fu. That's what I would expected from my friends. But in all honesty and "scientific honesty", you cannot be real to support the "facts" in the book. (the Sun were not risen from west -- even if during the worst days of Chinese Cultural revolution; nor does United flew Shanghai to San Fran in 1984) 4. Those of Ms Fu's "friends" who will support and claim a smear campaign of all those who doubted Ms. Fu's facts: all those who claimed Ms Fu's fact are "sent by Chinese Government" How delusional they are: 4.1 Ms Fu's savior: Deng, Xiaoping -- who in her interview (live, youtube) saved her from execution, were not a fan of CR 4.2 The current leaders of Chinese gov -- (and their parents) -- are all suffered in CR so: who are these nuts claiming the Chinese Gov wants to maintain CR is the "right thing"? If they really believe that, how about send those idiots to China with a banner " we are the child of the CR". Are we that ignorant or... we are just clueless as Ms Fu? It is true that there is a Chinese sense of "national pride", but none of them will defend CR. While on the same topic, Ms Fu, and her blind support are -- more of the CR product: we will support what (Ms Fu said -- used to be Chairman Mao's instruction) -- how ironic it is, of you care to take a step back. 5. The people objected to the lies: It is true there are many different groups in objecting the lies Ms Fu has made up. Let's not linger on the reasons (of many others), but try mine (i suspect many agrees with me): If we support a lie, we are no better than the liars of the authority (communist, US, or anyone). If you are willing to support the lies for one entity, because it is convenient for your (xxx: benefit), then there is no principal, we are all in for a buck (a penny), we all deserve to be crushed by one tyranny or another. I think we deserve better. 6.Finally: for some specifics: 6.1: Did she flight United from Shanghai to Sn Fran? Some comments stated why anyone should linger on that; here is why: Because Ms Fu made a point: many of the flight attendants spoke no Chinese (which added her misery of the trip of 14 hours she remembered so vividly) -- could that be the same memory of the "killing of the teachers by the horse -- which Ms Fu is now admitting come be a vivid "memory of hers"; isn't it fair to ask, what other "facts" are based on "vivid memories", not actual facts... 6.2: Did she get her Green Card (PR status) as she implied to XinDao News via political asylum (based on her famous USCIS award); or rather, via a convenient marriage arrangement. True love is all what we desire for, but why Ms Fu needs to fake that, (and time and again), in her memoirs. 7. How about we focus on facts and verifiable facts: 7.1 Let's not call people names: the doubters are not "smears" -- unless you have evidence that are smears from Chinese gov -- i do not, unless you do, you are THE smear (how about look up the definition of smear) 7.2 Let's focus on facts - yes, i cannot prove a negative (this is not how United States is about) -- if you are claiming "you can vouch.. " for the facts, how about provide the proof. Yeap, the doubter are easier in US, that's how we liked it, that is why most of immigrants gone for American. Liberty and Assumption of Innocence are gold. 8. Let me run wild: In one of the post, I think John Gage (kowtow's to you for what all you have done), it appears that John is claiming that Ms Fu being in NCIS/NCSA, if the same logic held true: Marc was hired by Ms Fu, thus Fu takes the credit of internet as we know it, by Ms Fu fact, she was "deported by Mr Deng, XiaoPing", thus. Mr. Deng is responsible for internet as it is; moreover, Mr. Deng would not be where he was without China Chairman Mao, and without CR, Ms Fu will not be what she is, so, the credit of internet goes to Chairman Mao of China. I know I am going out of a little tangent on this -- but ain't this we are implying and shooting for? 9. True: I am not using my real name -- I am Chinese born American, I have not 100% comfortable that I will be free of retaliations -- some of the "claimer of smear" proves that. In my (limited understanding of American legal system): claiming a smear with evidence is ... defamation -- how can be any fair minded American can simply claim "Chinese Agent" of anyone doubted Ms Fu's claim in her book, especially when she admits some facts might be "her imagination"... 9.1 If Ms Fu admit she has "imagined the fact", I wonder how can you vouch the "fact" or claim.. "it is all true", unless you are on the same "dilution" frequency... 9.2 Someone asked: who gave a dame of Ms Fu took UA flight or not, why anyone focus on that: let me respond simply: Ms Fu made it a big deal: "flight attendant spoke no Chinese; 14 hours of flight...". If you want to defend a lie... you should confirm with Ms Fu... After millions miles on UA, UA flight attendant will object. So, Mr X (or Ms Y) -- go read that book you did not purchase (a favor to Ms Fu), and resubmit the question "who cases -- after you eliminate Ms Fu" -- how about you refrain your question as "why Ms Fu want to emphasizes [United Airline] and flight attendant speaks no Chinese..." -- before you ask the question .. "who cares..." apparently Ms Fu cared enough to put that into the book 30 years after the fact... You as a supporter of Ms Fu, at least should pay tribute to her, or .. you just did not buy her book? Shame on you (for not donating to that lies)... 10. whom am I, am I available in debate? I am available for in person discussion -- if you desire. I do not desire to name calling or hate mails. Sample answers: Q: "you have not read all pages of the book, thus..." Let me respond in advance: "s*** smells bad, I do not need to taste them all to make that conclusion, if you do, go ahead, be your own guest" Q: "You are an Chinese agent..." Let me respond in advance: "I came to US, just like you ancestor, I take pride to be an American, should we debate the issue, or discuss why your grand father (or great grand father) came to US?; I game, will you?" Q: "Ms Fu is successful..." Let me respond in advance: "Yes she is, she married well, she managed her company well. But did she has to lie?"; "Gates and Jobs were successful, should we put them in China or Nazi Germany to make it more compel?" Q: "Why you are doing this?" Simple: Millions people suffered in CR, only way to prevent from it happening again in future is the truth, at least we owe this to the people who suffered.... Or simply: you want to claim 007James Bond as "history of cold world"?
