I think this product may be an imitation, maybe not even by Howard Products. I bought it a couple of months ago, and something about the label didn't look quite right to me. I used it just now, and realized I didn't get the usual orange oil smell, but rather a slightly chemical petroleum scent. And yes, when I took another look at the label it does contain petroleum. The real Howard Orange Oil is pure orange oil.
Ok, since I wrote this I did some research. I went to Ace Hardware, where I have always gotten my Howard Orange Oil, but they now had the same product I had gotten through Amazon. I called Howard"s and asked if they had changed the formula. Yes, they have. The state of CA sued them because orange oil has too many VOCs. It is apparently now illegal in most states to add orange oil to cleaning products and so they have discontinued the original product. The greatest content of orange oil allowed is 3%. We are still allowed to use aroma therapy grade orange oil if we want. I bought some of the original at Ace 6 months ago. It must have been the last of their stock. If I had realized I would have bought everything they had on the shelf!!!
Since the really helpful Howard's person gave me the hint about aroma therapy oil, I checked to see if it is available in bulk. IT IS. You can order a Gallon of oil for 32.99 on Amazon and the shipping is free. If I am doing the math right that is a little over $4 for 16 oz. I just paid $10 for the petroleum. From now on I am going to order the pure orange oil for my cleaning polish!!
