Full of harmful racial stereotypes
As a mixed race family - and mom to two kids that absolutely love mixing paint colors - I was excited to see such positive reviews and really wanted to love this book. Unfortunately, it's full of offensive and harmful racial stereotypes. Take the yellow dots. The yellows are the smartest, and are drawn with exaggerated Asian eyes and disproportionately wearing glasses 😩The red ones - which are the loudest - are drawn wearing hats, etc clearly associated with Black culture. Sure, some people might say NBD (who presumably haven't had the headache of dealing with racial stereotypes like this there whole lives), but what I totally don't get is all the reviews holding this up as a great example of a book promoting understanding about diversity. It's just the opposite - reinforcing stereotypes that pigeonhole minority groups into restrictive stereotypes. Who is writing all these reviews about how great the book is for promoting diversity? I assume people who totally don't get what it's like to be pigeonholed into a caricatured ethnic stereotype... Please don't add this book to your school library!!!
