★★☆☆☆
Intriguing premise, but gratuitously violent. Couldn't keep watching.
I was intrigued and enjoyed the 1st episode. The show has a strong cast and lots of potential. Had to stop halfway through episode 2 -- what's going on at that point could be conveyed by suggestion and suspense, and be just as terrifying without an explicit, extended scene of torture (and I'd already endured watching repeated people being shot in the head - but the torture stuff is a whole other level of disturbing). I realize this kind of "torture porn" is not unusual these days, but I'm just not up to investing in a show that's so violent so early in the season, and with really no good reason -- the bad guys are SUPER creepy and viewers could grasp that without so much explicit violence. Too bad, as it otherwise seems smartly written and I was looking forward to more of John Cusack's character, and all the others. But I just can't do it. I sometimes wonder if actors / directors / producers have become desensitized to what it is they are filming. And for all the effort that goes into creating such disturbing scenes and making them feel very realistic, it ultimately seems kind of lazy. Seeing someone tortured for minutes on end doesn't, in fact, further the plot or character development. And I wasn't far enough into the season (thankfully) to feel like I needed to power through it. Which is disappointing, in these pandemic times. Thought maybe I'd found a new show to binge. I guess I'll keep looking.
