Bad switches, poor quality and batteries that don't fit snugly to the tool
I bought this set specifically because it offered the 5ah batteries, they were brushless, and were the "latest technology", unlike the "combo kits" that offer up last years models in a package price... I wanted the very best, so I bought this set. What a joke....on both of the units, the directional switch is jacked up; the Hammer Drill switch is sloppy and floppy - as if it is already worn out as it easily moves in and out with the slightest bump, and the impact driver switch is so hard to move it's inconvenient to do so without using a lot of thumb force. Secondly, the 5ah battery's do not fit the tools snugly. The batteries clunk and move back and forth on the tools as you raise or lower the tool to use it. WTH? It's instantly annoying as hell - it makes your hand instinctively think that something is not right with the tool. What a crock of sloppiness - come on DeWalt... do they actually check for quality control at the DeWalt assembly plant before they ship them out? Reading the other reviews, it sounds like the switches are an issue, so I am glad I did more reading and have decided to return these. I will be researching Milwaulkee and Makita, perhaps even the lower priced brands. Side by side to my Ryobi, the Ryobi feels like the higher quality tool... better balance, smoother, quieter. I get that Ryobi is rated as more of the weekend hobbiest tool, and DeWalt is for the professional who uses it every day, but my cheapy Ryobi totally feels more solid, and it's 3 years old. I am so disappointed in DeWalts quality. What a waste of my time... back to the UPS store to drop these off.
I just now saw a reply from DeWalt... thank you for responding. Amazon sent me out a replacement, and the problems were the same as the first set... in fact the forward/reverse switches were in even worse condition. I sent both sets back to Amazon for credit to my account. I have been back to Home Depot to try out the tools they have there on display. Interestingly enough, when I purchased these from Amazon, I lived in Iowa... so the Davenport Iowa Home Depot is where I went to compare switches and batteries. The units in Home Depot in Iowa had better switches... tighter... they felt better, but the batteries were still loose and clunky. I have since moved to Colorado and went to the Home Depot in Loveland. The DeWalt demo units there were terrible! The switches were in some cases not even working! On one of them, the switch simply moved back and forth and didn't activate anything. I tried switches on all of the display units... none of them felt "new". They all felt as if they were defective. Is DeWalt becoming one of those companies who are settling for low quality to cut costs? Give me a higher priced unit and give me switches that work, and batteries that fit properly... I'd gladly pay more. I have just purchased a DeWalt 14 gallon shop vac. I am hoping that I am not disappointed. What happened to the quality that DeWalt has always had? I'm confused, but thankful for Amazons return policy. Please DeWalt... Send me an 887 with switches that work, and a battery that doesn't feel like I have to use duct tape to keep it on the unit... please change my mind and provide a logical explanation and I will once again be that loyal DeWalt user that I would like to be!... and I will be sure to change my review to reflect that.
