Since this Jack Reacher short story released so close to the publication date of the next Jack Reacher novel, Personal: A Jack Reacher Novel, I thought there might be a connection between the two. Well, I was wrong except for the fact that there is a name mentioned in this story of a major character in the upcoming novel. This is a short story that is too long because there isn't anything there to begin with. Why not just ask buyers to put $2 in an envelope and mail it to Mr. Child? Through the generosity of the Delacorte Press/Random House ARC (Advance Reader's Copy) policy I have already read "Personal". That was a very enjoyable book for me with a return to the characters and plotting that got me interested in the series in the first place. So don't buy this one unless you just want to read a short portion of the first chapter of the new book. Otherwise, save your money and wait until August 28, 2014 (Amazon.co.uk) or September 2, 2014 (Amazon.com) for a story that actually has a purpose and explains what the heck happened. This story has such an ambiguous ending that I have no idea what was being hinted at.
