Warning read before purchasing this tea kettle
I ordered this teakettle from Amazon 5 months ago and was quite happy with it. I had researched many kettles on Amazon before the purchase and liked the ratings and that it was made of surgical stainless steel. Last night as I was cooking supper, using multiple burners on my electric stove, I accidentally turned on the back burner where the tea kettle was sitting, instead of the front as I intended, with my pot of water for pasta. This is something I have done once before by accident in 30 years of cooking resulting in a scorched pot. This time, I noticed my mistake after about 5 minutes when the front pot wasn't boiling. I lifted the tea kettle off the hot burner to move to the empty sink. I was shocked to see molten metal dripping from the bottom of the kettle onto my wood floor. The entire capsule melted off the bottom of the pot. In my rush to the sink, 3 foot distance, I stepped on one of the blobs and seriously burned my foot! The melted blobs sprayed out in an 8 foot diameter. We now have 18 quarter sized burn marks in our wooden floor, two burns on area rugs and a serious, quarter sized painful burn on my foot which required a doctor visit, and will take weeks to heal completely. There was also a nasty smell of melted metal that lingered for hours even with all windows open and 2 exhaust fans running. I'm so glad there were no small children or pets in the kitchen at the time! I have done some research and know that the electric stove top can not heat to a temperature that would melt stainless steel, or copper or aluminum. So what is that "copper capsule" really made of? It must be a mix of metals with a lower melting point, hopefully not toxic to breathe. I could not find information on who manufactures this product but it comes from China. This product is dangerous! No pot should melt! If you own this pot, do not keep it on the stove top or always keep water in it. I almost always had water in it but many family members use the stove. If you are considering buying this pot, please don't, buy one without the capsule bottom. Amazon has refunded us for the purchase price but we have had not luck contacting the manufacturer so far.
