Not As Represented
I read the hype and believed it. Gullible me. Mrs. Perivale may be an older person, but the author presents her like a teenager, or possibly even a tween. As a 74 year old, I resent how this character was hyped as a senior, then given many of the false tropes of an old person pasted on top of a tween, then stirred well with a good deal of wish-fulfillment and MarySueisms.
We're old, not freaking stupid.
Want to read a great book about an older character who does something amazing and questy and fantaastic? How about a First Contact with an alien race? Try "Remnant Population" by Elizabeth Moon. That'll show you how to represent a senior character in fiction.
Or, if fantasy is more your style, try Kevin Hearne's "Ink and Sigil" (or really, much of the Iron Druid Chronicales).
Not this, though. The uathor has no clue how to write a older person, despite proclaiming to have done so. Does he even know anyone over the age of 30? It doesn't read like it. Even 40 year olds are more mature and less whiny or accepting than Mrs. Perivale. And that little fillip of "so there!" at the end was gratuitous wish-fulfillment of an extraordinary sort - mostly because it is so unbelievable.
Not going to read the sequel, regret paying for this one.
