Dehumidifier On Steroids. IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ UPDATE - DO NOT BUY
Not your usual dehumidifier. Nor is the cost. Heavy and appears to be well made. Works as advertised. Replaced a $300 Fridgedaire unit for residential basement use. Since I have had it for just over two weeks I can not comment on longevity. At this price I expect it to last several years at least. A better alternative to having a moldy basement. I did contact customer service prior to purchase to help select the right model for my application. The rep was polite and helpful. I purchased the 90 pint model with pump upon recommendation of customer service. This was excellent advice. If you are not sure of which model you require give them a call. However, as a general rule with some exceptions upgrading will leave you more satisfied and result in less regret.
Update:
One year and one month after purchase I noticed this unit stopped dehumidifying the air in my basement. I am certain it broke within the one year warranty but I was careless and did not monitor the unit. As long as I heard the compressor working I believed it was functioning. I called customer service and was advised that despite being one month out of warranty it would be repaired at no charge if I would ship it to the repair station at my expense. Then it would be shipped back to me at no charge. I accepted this offer and although the shipping fee amounted to $230 I felt that this was fair since I was careless in not detecting the malfunction earlier. By the way, UPS damaged the unit in transit and the damage was also repaired free of charge. I am not deducting any stars because I do believe it is a good dehumidifier but if it still does not work properly after testing I will edit my review again. I did learn some lessons. All mechanical devices such as dehumidifiers, no matter how robust will fail at some time- some sooner and some later. I expected 5 years of trouble free service. Shipping on an 80 plus pound unit to North Carolina is expensive. UPS is not infallible and damaged the unit through carelessness. Alor Air did the best it could to assist me and I am grateful. If you buy an extended warranty such as the one sold by Square Trade make sure that it covers all shipping costs. It appears that you can not bring this to your local appliance shop in the event repairs are needed. I would still rate the unit 5 stars (unless I have more problems) due to accommodating customer service even though I expected to get several years of trouble free service from it in view of it’s cost and heavy duty appearance. My far less expensive Fridgedaire unit worked for several years until it was recalled.
Update
After the unit was returned to me it appeared to be working. However, appearances can be deceptive. While the unit cycled on and off as needed, I noticed that there was often a pool of water under the unit. Rather than ship it back to the seller I decided to open the unit and inspect. What I found was the plastic tray under the coils was cracked. Water would escape the unit rather than get directed to the internal pump. Using quick setting epoxy and silicone adhesive I repaired the crack. It should be noted that an ineffective attempt was made to fix the broken tray prior to my discovery. I could see that glue had been applied by someone other than me. Having fixed the tray I was certain that I would now have a functioning unit. However, the dehumidifier coils now freeze up almost immediately when turned on (see photo of coils taken after several hours of continued operation, the white is ice). Once this happened the humidifier no longer removes moisture from the air.
From a purchase that I raved about I have become a very unhappy customer. I rarely leave negative reviews but this dehumidifier deserves no stars if that were possible.
I would caution prospective purchasers to avoid this AlorAir dehumidifier. The build of the dehumidifier inspires confidence. It is robust and has hefty weight that inspires confidence. However, it is plagued with problems. The plastic tray was protected within the unit and obviously broken prior to installation. Quality control is unacceptable. The cost of shipping to AlorAir for repair was $230.00. The removal of the unit from the basement and transport to the shipper required two men and was difficult at best. The time the unit was gone from my basement allowed moisture to do harm to the items stored therein or perhaps the mold occurred while I incorrectly thought the unit was functioning. The repair done by AlorAir (replacement of the pump and addition of refrigerant) was obviously incomplete as the technician overlooked the cracked plastic tray or made an ineffective repair of the tray (impossible to tell at this point).
At a cost of $1300. 00 plus the cost to return for repair ($230.00) I am thoroughly disgusted with this product. I thought I was getting an industrial quality dehumidifier when in fact I was better off with the consumer grade dehumidifier it replaced. I would urge prospective customers to avoid AlorAir dehumidifiers. Better to go to the nearest membership warehouse or home improvement retailer and buy a less expensive but more well known brand. Buying this AlorAir dehumidifier was like taking $1530.00 and tossing it in the trash. Lesson learned.
