Worst Screen Protector Ever
I typically use Zagg invisableSHIELD for scratch protection on my portable electronic devices. However, I recently used a similar Moshi protector for my MacBook Pro and loved it, so I thought I’d try this on my Fire HD 8.9”. Boy was that a mistake.
First, I noticed right away that there is a microdot grid across the entire protector. This is not noticeable if your using the browser, but if you have a dark screen backgrounds—such as watching movies—this pattern can become glaringly obvious and quite distracting. I wrote to Moshi to see if my protector was defective, and they told me that the pattern was intentionally added “to allow touch sensitivity and reduce the oil-slick effect noticed on many other film protectors”. Given that the protector is for an HD screen—and that clarity thus wins out over any “oil-slick effect”—this microdot grid seems to be a major design flaw.
Second, the protector has noticeable color distortion depending upon how you hold the device. More specifically, the protector can add a rainbow-effect to the screen—similar to the rainbow-effect in a soap bubble or spilled gasoline. Again, give the HD screen, this is another major design flaw.
So, don’t buy this protector. Get a Zagg invisableSHELD protector instead. I have Zagg invisableSHELDs on all of my other portable electronic devices—cell phone, iPod, Kindle 2nd Gen., Kindle PaperWhite, laptop—and can attest that they provide excellent scratch protection (though no shock protection) without noticeable affecting the thickness or clarity of the device. Also, while they are a bit time consuming to apply, any initial bubbles disappear within a few days—which is a huge plus compared to other thin protectors. However, there is no full-body invisableSHIELD for the Fire HD 8.9” yet—only a screen protector. I spoke with Zagg’s customer service team—and while they don’t know when the full protection will be released, the do expect it to be soon.
So, if you need a protector now, get a Zagg. If you already have a protector like me, then you should wait until Zagg releases the “maximum protection” full-body option for the Fire HD 8.9”—unless your current screen protector is truly unbearable and you can’t wait even a few weeks to replace it.
