Didn't like this one
Didn't like this one. I really liked Fairchild, and was hoping for more good from this one. Didn't find it. The writing was fine, but I found the plot a little iffy, and I really didn't like the main female lead. Really. Note to authors: bitchy is not the same thing as spirited. In Fairchild, Sophy is spirited, ie: clever, a little mischievous, and prone to go her own way. She is also kind, sweet natured, and generally a good sport. In Incognita, Anna is bitchy. She is also beautiful and apparently, that's enough to make our hero fall in love with her. Later on in the book we find out that she has other good qualities but by then Alistair has been in love with her for ages. I have issues where characters get a pass because they're so good looking - male or female. 2nd note to authors: having crappy things happen to you doesn't make you sympathetic. It makes you a victim. You can have your characters respond to their troubles in heroic, or stoic ways, and this naturally demonstrates who and what kind of people they are. Anna responds to her troubles by playing kissing games with at least one guy, and sleeping with four others, and that brings us to....reality check: In a small village that kind of behavior would be gossiped about from hither to yon, and then back again. The folks up at the big house would have heard about it from their servants long before the girl in question turned up pregnant. She is ashamed of her behavior later but it's only after she gets pregnant that she stops. This is, in my opinion, self destructive, and dumb. Also icky. Her husband has a mistress and treats her badly, so she is just as faithless? I could go on about how she deals with her son - three is not too young to introduce the idea that it is not okay to hit, or bite or throw things at other people, but that would not be a deal breaker if I liked her otherwise. I don't. There are other relationships explored but they aren't enough to compensate for Anna. So yeah.
