Does Not Deliver What it Promises
Okay so I really like X-Wing (got 42 ships and more coming) and have been looking forward to X-Wing 2.0. I have to say I am extremely disappointed with Fantasy Flight Games and what they have produced in these conversion kits. The print quality is not up to par and there is a film that tears when you try to separate the tokens from the main piece they all come attached to. For this much money the print job should be premium, and it is not.
But that is not the big issue for me. They advertise that they give you multiple copies of ships and all the upgrade cards you need to take your old X-Wing version 1 ships to play inside 2.0. The reality is they give you just enough to play with your old ships, but not in the combinations you might need or expect.
Here is an example for you. So you have two V1 of the Millennium Falcon. That would give you the pilot bases so you could play with both Han Solo and Chewbaca on the board at the same time. That could be fun right! The conversion kits states that they give you 2 Millennium Falcons which would make this old V1 combo possible.
While the conversion kit does give you two move dials for the Falcon they only give you one set of pilot bases. So why is this important? It means you can’t fly the ships you want with the pilots you had. You are forced to fly with lower level pilots because in the case of Han and Chewy, Han is on one side, Chewy on the other. You literally can’t fly them both.
So even though you could technically fly two Falcons you most likely will not get to fly the squad you had used in your V1 games. This happens with every ship. So another example, they say you get 4 Z95s, but yeah they only gave you 4 pilot bases, so you can’t fly any combination of the 8 pilots you would have had access to in your V1 games. So that tie swarm you were looking forward to playing, well you won’t get to unless you spend more money.
They also only give you 2, COUNT THEM 2, upgrades cards for each original card in V1. That is it, no mas! So if you have any squads that you have built that use more than 2 copies of any one upgrade card you are out of luck. I mean, they could have at least been decent and given 3 cards of each since many popular squads fly in twos or threes, that way they have you covered.
Still given FFG’s history they certainly have a history of going cheap and expecting you to shell out more money for another expansion set. For example, look at the dice in the core set: the X-Wing uses 4 attack dice at range one and they only give you three, Ties can roll 4 or 5 defense dice depending on bonuses and yep still only three. Did they fix this in the V2 core set, of course not because why cut into future profits from expansion sets.
When you call FFG and Asmodee Customer Service and let them know about your frustrations what is their answer? Well you get one of two:
1. You can always continue to play version 1. (Yeah because I just spent close to $200 upgrading my game so I can play version 1, awesome response!)
2. Another way you can get the pilot bases and upgrade cards you want is to buy the expansion sets to gain more cards or purchase a second conversion kit. (SAY WHAT!?)
Here is the deal, this would not have been such a big deal to me if they had not advertised that you would get all you need to play your old ships then proceed to say they were giving enough to cover “X” number of each ship. Again, technically you can play what they say the kit covers, it certainly does not take your V1 and make it fully playable in V2. For that most players will need at least two, possibly three of these kits. It is insane that they did this, especially considering this all just cardboard. There is no way these cost that much to make and distribute. This is just a big money grab and I find myself extremely flustered by FFG and Asmodee for their total lack of forethought.
This product feels like a slap in the face from a company (talking about FFG now) that promised to breath new life into a game I truly enjoy and give guys like me the ability to upgrade without having to rebuy all my old ships. The only way this would work to get my V1 ships to were they could be fully played in V2 is to buy two of these. At $100 per faction that is way too steep.
At this point I am just scanning cards and printing my own to play with friends.
If this was half or a third of what it costs right now it would be worth the price tag. But at its current price point, this is a total rip off and will not cover many V1 players needs without having to buy more kits.
