BEWARE!!!! Seat Belt Failed and our pup DIED!!!
Update: 6/14/2021 - It's been a few months since our dog was killed because of the failure of the Mighty Paw seat belt. We have still yet to hear from Mighty Paw. There is not much information about where this company is located. No physical address we can write or phone number. We will be talking to a lawyer.
On June 19th - my wife and I took our Beautiful 7 month old Border Collie / Australian Cattle dog mix to Harpers Ferry for a day out in the sun. After a wonderful day with our dog, we buckled her up, rolled down the widows and started home. Minutes into our drive, I heard a noise.... I looked back only to see our puppy jump out of the car and into on coming traffic. She died pretty quickly and didn't suffer long but it was the difficult thing my wife and I have ever had to go through together since we've been together. I had to drive our dead dog home and bury her that night. My wife cried for days and is still struggling with the loss of our dog. She was very beautiful... special... unique …. and can NEVER be replaced.
My Wife and I reached out to Mighty Paw with our story. I don't know what we were looking for but we were ANGRY and grieving. However, they made ZERO attempt to get in touch with us. Here is my letter that I sent them... maybe they will read it now:
"I am not sure why I am writing this. I am angry, grieving and looking for answers. This past Saturday, our beautiful pup, Luna, was secured in the back seat of our vehicle using the Mighty paw "Dog Seat Belt for Buckle". We had a wonderful day out with our dog in Harpers Ferry. It was one of many outings we have taken with our dog to the area. When we left, we buckled Luna into our car as we have done dozens of times before since purchasing her seat belt on Amazon. However, this day ended in tragedy. As we turned on to route 15 and began our venture home, I heard a "click" I looked in my rearview mirror just as my puppy was leaping towards the open window. I watched her leap from our car and directly into on coming traffic. My wife and I had to watch as she took her last breaths in the middle of the road.
The most difficult thing my wife and I had to go through in the 11 years we have been together.
The next day, after we buried her in the backyard, I took her seat belt to our Kia and tried them in each of the buckle receptacles. It latched into all the seat belt receptacles, except the one we had her locked into. The receptacle would no longer lock in the belt end of her seat belt. I then tested the seat belt receptacle with one of the vehicles seat belts. It latches. I pulled on it and moved it around and it didn't release. As per your website, "Buckles Securely and is IDENTICAL to a Human Car Seat Buckle" … if that is the case, why didn't it latch or buckle in to the receptacle?
Again - I am not sure what I am looking for... I guess I am looking for answers. Maybe my story will save another dogs life. My wife and I are talking to a woman who has done research on "dog restraints" and looking for some answers to the questions we have.
Do I blame Mighty Paw? I do... we put a lot of faith in your product to keep our pup safe. Again to quote your products description "Adds the highest level of safety and security while driving with your dog".
What can be done? I don't know... We lost our dog... a refund seems incomparable to the tragic lose of our puppy that my wife and I had to witness.
In closing. I am not sure what I am going to do from this point forward... but I thought maybe I would let you know so you could review, recall or rebuild the Mighty Paw seat belt. If you want, I will send you pictures of the mangled, blood stained seat belt. She was hit so hard that the "Extra Durable Carabiner Clip, 850+ lbs Force Tension Features" was twisted and bent."
