2 stars, could have been 5 stars, bad product support!!!!
Short story: Furrion refused to replace a camera that mechanically failed on DAY 1 of use! A bad design and no documentation warnings of extreme fragility on the “pivot pin” on these cameras. Outside of this, the cameras seem to be working well and give me a great view of the sides and back of my travel trailer. If not for this support problem, I’d give 5 stars for this product.
Extended Review/Details:
I purchased this 850$ 4 camera kit for my brand new 2019 Forest River Flagstaff Shamrock Travel Trailer to give me some extra views from the front/back/sides. My travel trailer came with the “shark fin Housing” already wired in for the Furrion back camera. This kit was much more affordable than buying the cameras separately and came with a nice big screen.
I was so excited to use these cameras I actually had the dealer loan me a ladder (when I was picking up my trailer) and within 3 minutes I had the back camera installed in my trailer (it came pre-wired, so it was literally just 4 small screws and 1 connector to mount it. The cameras came pre-paired with my 7 inch screen so I was up and running VERY quickly!
Driving home, the camera worked great, no connection issues (despite that it was as far away from the display as it could get while towing the 22 foot long trailer). My one “problem” was that the camera was pointed to much down and I wanted to see a little more behind me. The camera is designed “supposedly” to pivot inside the housing of it’s mount. So.... when I got home, I got out my ladder, and went to tilt the camera “up” (So I could still see the back bumper, but also see behind me more). Trying to adjust it, I noticed that there was some resistance when trying to adjust it down. I tried again to pivot it and gave just a little more force (not excessive at ALL!) and something snapped and now the camera was loose on one side inside the camera housing.
I hoped that something just came out of it’s pivot point and I just had to snap something back into place, but alas, no luck.
I removed the camera from it’s mount and took it inside to find that although the design allowed the camera to pivot, it had some significant design flaws with trying to do this! First, the two “Pivot Pins” on each side of the camera are VERY small/fragile. In trying to adjust the camera, one of these pins had snapped off. The other problem is that the way the pivot housing is designed, the wire that comes out of the back of the camera, goes through a small hole in the pivot housing and the hole is placed away from where the camera wire comes out. On top of that, on the end of the connection cable coming out of the camera, there is a ferrite ring that is snapped onto the cable that will not fit through the hole on the housing. So really there is no room for the cable to “travel” when trying to adjust the camera, so by trying to adjust it, it put all the force on the left side pivot pin.
I instantly had several design changes I felt like I could do to make a channel in the housing for the cable to be able to travel (without compromising the structure integrity), but here is where I paused and decided that I probably shouldn’t start modifying this 850$ camera set without contacting Furrion support first to see about getting my camera replaced.
I went through their web portal and submitted a case, I got an e-mail the next day asking for pictures of what was wrong. I sent that e-mail immediately and didn’t get a reply for the next 3 days. On day 3 I called and was told someone would be getting back with me soon. On day 5 I called again, and again was told they would have someone reply to my e-mail. I got a reply later that day and they basically said: “Sorry that pivot pin broke and we have no way to replace that camera housing. You will need a replacement camera and we won’t provide that under warranty.” WHAT?? So I ended up calling one last time on Tuesday (after my reply to that update went un-answered) and although the folks I talked to were very friendly, they would NOT help me resolve this issue without me purchasing a new camera from them (They offered a small discount on a new one, but still would have been over 120$ out of my pocket). I find this VERY unsatisfactory and hence the 2 star review. Outside of this support challenge, the camera system is working very well (so far), and I’m super happy with how everything looks and works (outside of this design/mechanical issue). I was able to use a combination of super glue and epoxy to re-attach the pin and I modified the pivot housing to create a channel that the cable coming out of the back of the camera could move through and re-installed it in the pre-existing housing on my trailer and was able to perfectly adjust the angle to what I wanted. I just hope my glue holds!
