A Lackluster Finish To A Series That Had Such Promise—There are some Spoilers in this Review
I struggled with this book. The writing was clinical, and I felt the author had lukewarm feelings/connection to the characters, and the characters exhibited lukewarm connections with each other. The bond among Lexie and her fellas was weak for all the boring sex scenes and stilted interactions they have with each other. I can’t tell if this book is truly an ending, or the setup for another series with Hades, Quinn, Jade, Ethan, Asher, Riley, Ryan, Evelyn, Zahur, Lexie, and maybe Jake. If that is the case, I hope the next series is better plotted and executed than The Veil Diaries, but I have serious reservations, and I doubt I will read it. In this book, there were too many plotholes and revelations without the appropriate buildup, and I found myself wondering who truly wrote this book and do they understand how to craft characters and plots that make sense? Since when do both Lexie and Eric say “Shut it,” which is a British way to say: Shut up? They’ve not used this turn of phrase in any of the other books, and I don’t think they went to Great Britain at any point. The deal Lexie strikes with Death leaves me confused because she could have bargained better. Lexie’s got the power, and she’s holding a lot of the cards—her Reaper ancestor tries to tell her this. Once the threat has been neutralized, Lexie doesn’t tell her fellas about her deal with Death. What happened to communicating with her harem? The villains’ motivations for what they do don’t make any sense? Why destroy the world to save one person when they won’t have a stable world to live in?! I don’t understand why the Reapers, Death, Evelyn, and Zahur don’t do more to help; this series has been about supernaturals doing world-in-peril stuff so how is it not in their jurisdiction?! If the world ends, what job will be left for the so-called “neutral” Reapers and Death or Evelyn and Zahur?! There’s been nothing in the previous books to set up the conclusion to the character arc for Tara. Rory devolves from being a strong protector and voice of reason to running away. The big reveal of what Ethan is is treated with not much feeling—there was more reaction to how much it would take to feed Jade than to what he’s been turned into! And, then Ethan and Lexie go have sex? Come on! How can Asher and Lexie have oral sex without him infecting her and making her a shifter? Did I miss something? I have a lot of questions about what will happen next to Lexie and her harem, but I also find myself not really caring to know the answers, and that is a shame.
