Don't buy it yet! The Echo Show needs refinement. Don't buy until 2018 or 2019!!!
If you were thinking about getting an Echo Show, DON'T. It's not ready for prime time yet. I'm no stranger to technology or Amazon devices so I was very eager to buy the Echo Show. I have a Fire TV, multiple Fire TV sticks, multiple dots, multiple Echos, and home automation running for lighting, yada yada yada.
THE ONLY REASON WHY YOU SHOULD GET AN ECHO SHOW IS FOR VIDEO CALLING.
(and video calling still needs refinement)
I wanted to set up one Echo Show for my distant relative in a care home so we can video chat. There are two approaches to do this.
IF YOUR RELATIVE HAS A SMART PHONE BUT NO AMAZON ACCOUNT
Setup an Amazon account for your distant relative and log into the Amazon Echo Show using their credentials. Before you do any calling from their Amazon Echo Show and this new Amazon account, you'll have to authenticate a cell phone number first. Well, that's not happening because I don't have access to their cell phone and they sure as heck aren't going to be able to set it up on their own.
IF YOUR RELATIVE DOESN'T HAVE A SMART PHONE OR AMAZON ACCOUNT
Setup both Echo Shows on your account and ship one to a relative. This will work but the auto-answer feature doesn't work. I work at a software company and we create iOS apps... the Amazon Echo app is RIDICULOUSLY limiting when it comes to managing devices. (see screenshot images)
OTHER THINGS I WANTED TO DO BUT COULDN'T
I CAN'T LOG OUT!
I have to reset the entire device and watch the intro video show that DOES NOT HAVE A SKIP FEATURE and that video show is just a commercial - it tells you WAYS to use Echo Show but NOT HOW to use the Echo Show. STUPID.
I CAN'T AUTO-ANSWER!
I can't setup the auto-answer feature. The Amazon Echo app is not logical at all. I should be able to set "Auto-Answer" in the settings section for each Amazon Echo Show but the options are super limited.
I CAN'T PLAY AMAZON VIDEOS ON IT!
I can't even play movies from Amazon video. I tell the Amazon Echo Show to play a video, it says it will play a video and nothing changes on the screen. It's connected to my Amazon account but nothing is showing on the screen. Is it playing on my Amazon Fire TV at home? If it is, why the hell do I need a $229 Amazon Echo Show to do that job when my $49 Echo Dots and $180 Amazon Echos will do the job.
Some other issues that show the Amazon Echo needs refinement...
+ I received a "Template Error" issue. The device didn't know what to do. I didn't know what to do. WTF?
+ HTML shows in the news section. WTF? This is User Interface 101, don't show code on the front-end...

Overall, I bought two of these Amazon Echo Shows and I was REALLY disappointed. Save your money, don't buy them. If you need to check on a relative, just get an iPad. For $390 (the cost of two Shows after tax and Amazon's $100 off coupon) I can get a iPad with a 9.7 inch screen delivered to my house so I can set up the wifi, and then shipped to my distant relative. I don't need to buy TWO devices to try to get them to talk to each other and have that fail miserably because they can't even auto-answer the calls from one to another.
