Warning: Contains Alumina (aluminum), a NEUROTOXIN—see photo
I started buying Burt's Bees lip shimmer years ago because it's a natural product by a company that claims to avoid chemicals and other bad ingredients, and I really like it, so yesterday I finally decided to expand into their other lip products and bought lip oil, lip gloss, and tinted lip balm. In the store I read the ingredients list for known allergens before buying. All looked good. Today something prompted me to re-read the ingredients list. When I did, I found alumina. It sounded very close to aluminum, so I looked it up, and indeed, alumina is aluminium, the British spelling of aluminum: a neurotoxin that does not leave your body when you ingest or absorb it. Aluminum accumulates in the body where it can eventually affects the nervous system. Several studies now show a strong connection between elevated aluminum levels with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and now Autism, and rates for these diseases are skyrocketing as the years progress. Ingesting aluminum is a risk I refuse to take. I've been working to eliminate the element since learning the danger. I no longer use traditional antiperspirant: I use a deodorant stone comprised of natural mineral salts with no aluminum. I stopped using tin foil and aluminum pans in cooking, and I read all the ingredient labels in food so I don't knowingly buy foods containing, or contained by, aluminum (pastries, baking powder, fish sticks—you'd be surprised how many foods needlessly contain aluminum). After I found the alumina in the lip oil, I started looking at the other Burt's Bees product I just bought. None in the lip gloss, thankfully. The tinted lip balm, however, didn't have a list on the tube, nor on their website, so I came here looking for an ingredient list. I found it "may" contain alumina. After all this, I started to wonder about the lip shimmer I've been using before I started eliminating aluminum, so I went back and looked it up, and darn it, there is alumina in there. :( The ingredient list on Amazon's product page for this champagne Lip Shimmer IS WRONG. It does not list alumina, but ALUMINA IS LISTED ON THE TUBE. See attached photo of this product I bought this summer. I'm very unhappy and quite upset. I used these lip colors exclusively because they were supposed to be natural, and thus, safe. A little while ago bought three new lip shimmer colors I don't think I can return. Now I must throw them all away and return the others because I refuse to put alumina on my lips where I can ingest it, and that leaves me to find new lip color. Most disturbing is when I went to Burt's Bees website to look up (unsuccessfully) the tinted lip balm ingredients, it gave a listing of ingredients they use and a list of ones they assert they will never use. Alumina wasn't on either list, and most definitely should be on their ingredient list because it's in several of their products. Aluminum may be natural, but it is dangerous to ingest and has no business being in a lip product. I strongly urge consumers to find safer lip products, and read your ingredients list on any makeup you use. Your future health may depend on it!
