Tips on choosing a foam roller
I actually have no issue with the firmness of this roller — remember that a roller is a tool (think of the different kinds of clubs that a golfer uses), so depending on your goals and knowledge base about roller density, this roller will work well for you — or not.
If you are new to self myofascial release (SMFR) with a foam roller, here is what I advise:
- Consult with a qualified health provider with a good understanding of your medical history. Explain that you want to explore SMFR, but you are not sure which size/shape (length/width), firmness, and texture (smooth or with texture) to select. Understand that with some health conditions, SMFR may be contraindicated, so checking in with your health provider is the best way to go.
- Do your research and start with a lighter density roller — I personally like the OPTP Pro-Roller Soft Roller (36”), as it is good for SMFR and gently massages the body and holds its shape well. If the price point is too high, consider a less costly white foam roller, but understand that it will likely lose its shape over time.
- I advise working with someone trained in SMFR to guide you through the process, as there are areas of your body (neck, lower back, knees, underarms, etc.) where you should not roll. MELT Method is a solid option, but I find Sue Hitzmann a bit verbose. OPTP has a number of books by Angela Kneale that provide clear direction about how to use the roller for gentle release or Pilates. Alternatively, your physical therapist or occupational therapist may have a recommended movement sequence that he/she may advise you to follow.
Back to this roller: the reason I have only given it two stars is because of its overwhelming chemical smell that immediately triggered my asthma in a profound way. Thankfully, I can return it and get my money back. FYI the OPTP roller also comes with a smell, but my asthma was less triggered by it and the fumes were not as intense (they also started to fade over time).
I hope this is helpful!
