Defective Meter/Horrible Experience
You may receive a functional meter from GQ Electronics. But, this is by no means guaranteed, and good luck getting your problem resolved if you get one of their bad ones! As a Senior Computer/Electronics Design Verification Engineer now working as an EMF Consultant, I know well how to determine if electronic hardware is defective in general (and EMF meters in specific), and the GQ-EMF 390 I received is clearly defective (details below and in the attached pics). For the same reason, it's also obvious to me when a manufacturer's Quality Control and Debug processes are broken: In this case, GQ Electronics allowed a defective meter to be shipped out not once but twice, they have repeatedly failed to properly identify/debug/fix the problem, and they're *still* wasting my time and energy with ridiculous, condescending and redundant run-arounds, instead of owning the problem and replacing the broken meter. Ego? Incompetence? Both?) As you can see from the attached photos (also sent to GQ Electronics), for example, the meter I received shows an RF reading of 0 mW/m2, in both "RF Browser" and "All-in-one" modes, even when placed right next to two transmitting RF sources (cordless phone handset and base station). For reference, you can see my known-good Cornet meter in the same pics, set to the same units, showing the proper RF readings. One would think this would be enough verification for them to recognize the problem and take responsibility for doing right by their customer who's debugged and verified the problem for them. But, amazingly, no.... When I sent the broken meter back to them, they called it "user error" because the meter happened to be in the mW/cm2 units (which I tried as a last resort when it only ever read 0 RF in mW/m2). As I've told them repeatedly, the meter has never registered an RF signal - it reads 0 RF in all RF-detecting modes, orientations, and units, even when right next to any type of RF radiation (cordless phones, wifi, mobile phones). But, they just ignored me and gave me a condescending lesson on the difference between the units settings (mW/m2 vs. mW/cm2) and sent the defective meter back to me, without even testing it (obviously). Now, even after viewing the photos, they've denied my second request to return the still-defective meter..instead giving me the run-around...saying that because of the location of the sensor, I should try different orienting the meter in different ways. Not only, as I've told them multiple times, does the meter read 0 RF in any orientation/units, but if one of their "working" meters cannot accurately detect an RF signal right next to TWO TRANSMITTING RF SOURCES (cordless base station and handset - see pics), then it's useless: Ie, if this is how one of their "working" meters functions, then your health is very much at risk if you rely on the GQ-EMF 390. But, I think the meter's truly defective, they just won't admit it, and this is just one more ridiculous and redundant run-around, wasting more of my time and energy, avoiding the problem, and leaving me with a meter that's useless for RF Radiation. Speaking of more ridiculous and redundant run-arounds: The first thing I asked on the phone when I called in originally and was told I needed to return the meter was, "Are there any possible firmware fixes I could try before sending it back?" Joseph told me, "No, it's a hardware problem, you need to return it." So, now, they're asking me for the serial # and firmware revision #...saying maybe it needs a firmware update. First of all, this was already checked (by my request before) I originally returned the meter. Second of all, don't they check this before sending out a meter in the first place...and, especially, when a meter's been returned?! (Again: Broken Debugging methodology, as well as broken Quality Control practices...not to mention the breach of ethics and professionalism.) So, you can expect nothing but headaches and unnecessary, unscrupulous, buck-passing run-arounds from GQ Electronics if you get one of their defective meters. They won't do the right thing by you by owning and fixing the problem. Instead, they'll blame you for it and waste your time and energy in avoidance tactics. I wish I'd never ordered it, and hope to make others aware of the risks of a similar experience if you order one of their meters. My experience doing business with GQ Electronics has left me angry, fed up, and very unsatisfied -- Beware!
