One Discolors in the Dishwasher
This should have been a five-star and fireworks review. It would have been if I had only bought one of these cheese slicers. In my considered opinion this is the ONLY cheese slicer on the market that is worth a dang. It is EXACTLY the cheese slicer I remember from my childhood, way, way back in the previous century. That unit may still be around somewhere doing its modest little job perfectly without any drama at all. It was bulletproof. Ever since then every cheese slicer I have had the misfortune to own has been a weak and too-soon-mortal imitation. I grew resigned to the fact that cheese slicers had become throw-aways. Nobody cared to make them well enough to last. When I found this guy on Amazon I recognized it instantly. No mistaking its simple, rugged design. Made in Germany? Well yes, of course! And I was not at all disappointed. It did its simple job wonderfully well. So satisfying. And it even went through the dishwasher and came up sparkling. Like new! It was the second unit that broke the magic. Yes, I bought another one. I expected the same Teutonic quality, and it was all there... EXCEPT when I put it through the dishwasher. Everything came out sparkling EXCEPT the roller. That came out gray. My guess is that the handles and the rollers of these units are made from aluminum. Aluminum that is 'anodized' to keep it from discoloring. 'Cept the roller on my second unit got a defective coating. The first one continues to come out of the dishwasher looking brand-spanking new. Not so its cousin. Both slicers work wonderfully well. Just one isn't so pretty. Darn. ****************** Update, May 2017 I ended up throwing away the defective cheese slicer. The 'gray' from the roller was transferring onto the cheese. But after some deliberation I decided to order one more slicer. The new slicer has been through the dishwasher a number of times now, without any discoloration. And the original slicer continues to come out looking like new. For now it appears that my second slicer was an isolated dud. At least it can be hoped. I'd love it if my other slicers would retain their like-new condition for years to come. If you choose to buy one I hope you will not be disappointed.
