Bad Workmanship, Worse Design - Inadequate According to Bat Conservation Experts
There are numerous problems with the Audubon bat shelter model NABAT. First, the design is entirely too small to attract bats, as I've now learned from the Bat Conservation Management website (no affliation.) Audubon Model NABAT fails basic design requirements to be certified, notably the NABAT is roughly 11" tall and 8" wide, but BCM stipulates 20" minimum height and 14" minimum width. Simply put, the NABAT model is too small to meet the temperature needs of bats. Aside from the basic design failure, the person who drove the screws through my roof top to the side members failed to ensure the screw was straight before torquing it. This caused the screw to shoot off-center, creating the side member to get a very large split. Clamps and wood allowed me to fix the side member, but now the threaded hole that aligns with the hole in the roof top is still crooked. In addition to the screwdriving issues, there is no caulking or gap seal on any joints. BCM insists bats need this for a usable house. So, I now have a poorly designed house that won't help bats. I'll install it, watch what happens, and compare this house with one that I'm going to build according to the free plans offered by Bat Conservation International (batcon dot org). Bottom line: do your homework and learn what the bat conservationists recommend before buying a house. Make sure it meets conservationists recommendations.
