★☆☆☆☆
Was seeking a critique from a Historian, dissapointing.
This was clearly written in response to the 1619 project as expected. It was not so much a critique of the History as a critique of the NYT project, liberals and arguing against the beginning of US History involving African slavery. I must confess I pre-ordered this book thinking it was written by Peter H. Wood an amazing Historian who's area of expertise is Colonial African-American History. I wanted to know his thoughts on 1619 as someone who recognized the importance of the Stono Rebellion as a defining moment in United States History. In general the 1619 project was ambitious but it also got some things wrong and I was looking for nuanced thoughtful critique from Peter H. Wood. I waited and instead of reading the book right away realizing it was not the wonderful Historian I was looking forward to and some other guy named Peter Wood (who is not a Historian at all) and returning this, I missed the window for Kindle returns. Probably should have gone to the library instead of wasting money. That said it is an eye opening book with respect to the conservative efforts to control and define US History. As a critique it is an uninspired rebuttal of the 1619 project. Instead it predictably focuses on telling only the English colonial story as an origin of the USA moving from 1619 to the Mayflower as the origin moment. I will probably loan it out to friends who are interested or try to figure out if I can donate it to my local public library's digital program.
