A Really Bad Book
I bought this book hoping for an update of the Kantian position, based on
contemporary cognitive science and neuroscience. Not so. What I found was a sophomoric
hypothesis supported by illogical arguments. Hoffman argues, for instance, that because
our senses can be fooled by optical illusions and camouflage, it follows that nothing we
apprehend corresponds to objective reality. He suggests that because flies don't see the
world as we see it, they don't see the world at all. Therefore you don't have to perceive reality
to thrive in the real world. This nonsense is presented in a namedropping, self-aggrandizing style.
Save your money.
